Definition

The McMaster Family Assessment Device (FAD) is designed to measure family functioning as described in the McMaster Model of Family Functioning. The General Functioning Scale of the FAD, used in Form II, is designed to distinguish dysfunctional families from well-functioning families. For the purposes of the TBIMS, the FAD is asked only of one significant other who considers him/herself to be a member of the person with brain injury’s family. See Appendix R for the items in the General Functioning Scale. Collect in follow-up years one and two.

The FAD is copyrighted; each Center must purchase a license, which includes the right to reproduce the data collection form.

Record the responses of only of one family member. It is not necessary to interview more than one family member.
